Traduction

Commentary

Foreign cults were numerous in Hellenistic Delos. Iamneia was a coastal town on the northwestern border of Iudaea and Heracles was worshipped in this region. Αὑρωνα is the Phoenician god Horon (figuring in Phoenician poetry under the name of Horon of Iabne). Another dedication (ID 2309) "... and to Heracles and the gods above" was found in the same sanctuary. For a discussion of these deities, cf. Bonnet. It remains unclear what the authority of this private dedication in Sanctuary L and what is its context in the sanctuary.

Cases in which one cannot sacrifice goats occur with some regularity on Delos. Goats were not allowed in the cult of Poseidon of Ascalon (CGRN 216); in a sacrificial regulation dedicated to Zeus Ourios, Astarte and Aphrodite Ourania, by another citizen of Ascalon—and probably belonging to the same sanctuary as the present inscription—goat, swine and cow are forbidden (CGRN 171, lines 7-8). Cf. also the brief discussion in Marcadé. The same type of interdiction against goats (and pigs) is found on Thasos in the cults of Hera, Heracles and Peitho (CGRN 23, CGRN 27, and CGRN 178).
