Commentary

In this document, a cult of Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira is established through a donation by an apparently wealthy individual, Pythokles. The money (a sum of a talent may be mentioned in line 6) is destined for sacrifices and games. The context for this donation is apparently substantiated by the calendar of the gymnasium of Kos, which must date to a slightly later period than the present document IG XII.4 281 (ca. 159-145 BC?). This calendar explicitly mentions a festival called the Pythokleia for Zeus Soter (at lines 33-34: "on the 10th of Artamitios, Πυθόκλεια Διὶ Σωτῆρι"). The present inscription thus must represent the installation of this festival, honouring Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira, though neither the epithets of Athena and Zeus nor the name of the festival appears clearly anywhere in the preserved text. For other donations validated by the city of Kos and its demes, cp. CGRN 161 (donation of Teleutias for the Asklepieion) and CGRN 197 (gift of Aristokreon in the deme of Isthmos).

As we are informed (line 7), Pythokles has "asked" for the priesthoods of Zeus Soter and of Athena Soteira to be heriditary and to remain within his family. This petition on the part of Pythokles indicates that we must be dealing with a decree of the city of Kos, accepting and codifying the use of his donation. Specifically on the matter of the priesthoods, Pythokles' eldest grandson is to hold that of Zeus Soter, and his youngest grandson the priesthood of Athena Soteira (lines 8-10); these measures are affirmed together in perpetuity, since we read that the eldest of the male descendants is always to be priest, apparently both of Zeus and Athena together. From later sources, we gather that this plan was successful: two Roman sources (IG XII.4 822 and 1053) mention a priest of the Pythokleioi. Though the priesthood is reserved for Pythokles' descendants, the scale of the cult clearly exceeds that of a "family cult": many civic officials are mentioned among the cult agents and participants (the monarchos, the agonothetes, the gymnasiarch, the under-gymnasiarch, and other public priests); sacrifices are perhaps to be performed "for the safeguarding of the city" (restored in line 19); the cult is listed in the calendar of the gymnasium as already mentioned; and the treasurers (tamiai) are to be in charge of the money (cf. Paul, p. 52).

Zeus and Athena are widely worshipped together as a pair on Kos. Cf. for example the cult of Zeus Polieus and Athena Polias (CGRN 86 A; cp. IG XII.4 332); Zeus Machaneus and Athena Machanis (IG XII.4 274); Zeus Alseios and Athena Alseia (CGRN 167). On these associations of Zeus and Athena, cf. Paul, p. 56-58. Zeus Soter is attested at Kos from the first half of the 3rd century onwards (IG XII.4, 68, where he is honoured together with Apollo Pythios and Nike after a military victory). Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira are worshipped together in the Koan deme of Phyxa (CGRN 146, lines 19-21, receiving a sacrifice on the 25th of Artamitios, and IG XII.4 407). Cf. Paul, p. 242 and 319-320, for a wider inventory of the combined cult of Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira in the Greek world.

The interpretation of the text remains difficult due to its highly fragmentary state: about a quarter seems preserved (about 14-21 letters in each line), though this is to some extent mitigated by its nearly equally highly formulaic character in many passages (the total restored length of each line is around 80 letters). The first part of the inscription concerns the terms and conditions of the donation. It discusses the transmitting of the priesthood within Pythokles' family (lines 7-10), then the financial obligations of the treasurers, who were apparently in charge of the money destined for this cult; they were to provide the amount of money necessary for each of the groups mentioned to make their sacrifices (lines 11-18). The funding for the offerings to Zeus seems to have been handed over once a year (i.e. presumably during the period of preparation for the festival), but the money for the offerings to Athena seems to have been transferred twice a year, and from two different sources (line 14: ἀπὸ τᾶν ποθ[όδων ...]; line 15: [ἀπὸ τῶν ...]των χρημάτων). A specification of the date for the festival follows (lines 18-19), and then a list of officials in the genitive (lines 19-23). Many of them seem to be related to an athletic context and we may thus hypothesize that they are the participants in a procession during the festival (similar lists of participants in a procession are found, e.g. in CGRN 163, CGRN 165, and CGRN 167).

In the remaining two-thirds of the preserved part of the inscription, sacrifices are prescribed for particular sacrificial agents or groups. If the restorations are correct, twelve different sets of sacrifices are preserved (numbered in the commentary below; cf. also the helpful outline in the edition by Hallof and Bosnakis). Each of these subsections is introduced by θυέτω δὲ καὶ ... / θυόντω δὲ καὶ ... (this formula is preserved in lines 36 and 38). The identity of the relevant individuals or groups is now predominantly lost, with the exception of the sacrifice of the descendants of Pythokles (lines 33-36), and that of the agonothetes responsible for the sacrifices in lines 40-49, which seems a likely restoration. Such lists of sacrifices prescribed for officials or groups of officials are rather common in for Kos (cp. e.g. CGRN 142, CGRN 147, lines 15ff., and CGRN 167, Face A, lines 24ff.).

The sacrificial regulations have been transmitted in a very fragmentary manner, but the individual description of each sacrifice apparently consists of some of the following identical elements: individuals or groups need to sacrifice "what they should sacrifice according to prescriptions" ([ὅσ]α ἐπιτέτακται θύεν αὐτ[οὺς, as preserved in line 50); sacrifices need to be made on a particular date, as preserved in line 30, very probably the 10th of Artamitios during which the Pythokleia occurred); sacrifices should be made to Zeus (lines 41, 58 and 71) and to Athena (lines 39, 64, and 68) respectively; the three species of animals mentioned are oxen, sheep and pigs (each occur as offerings for both gods); next, we find a requirement of sacrificing a heifer to Athena (line 25); financial arrangements may be specified (lines 26-27 and lines 34-35); and finally, there are mentions of "guest-hosting" (ξένισμος, lines 52 and 70) and the organisation of a "public feast" (δαμοθοινία, line 70), and the procedure for the division of the meat (lines 29, 49) is also explained. Hallof and Bosnakis in IG provide a helpful outline of the sacrifices and their recipients, as well as of the amounts budgeted for each animal: oxen are generally estimated at 140 dr. or 100 dr. (with some variations; the difference may reflect a difference in the gender of the animals, specifically between castrated males and cows; we note that the 100 dr. specimens are exclusively sacrificed to Athena); sheep at 25 dr. or 15 dr. (which may reflect a difference between castrated males and female specimens; but animals of both values are offered to Zeus and Athena); and pigs consistently at 25 dr. Given the uncertainty of many of the restorations in the text, however, we prefer to refrain from definitively identifying these possible differences in the gender of the animals.

Line 16-18 : Rather than referring to a portion of meat, μέρις here should properly refer to a "part" of the donation or the interest from the fund (i.e. a sum of money) assigned to each sacrificing individual or group.

Line 18: The allusion in the phrase "according to ..." (κατὰ τ[ὰ γεγραμμένα?) must be to an earlier or another part of present document, rather than referring to norms recorded elsewhere.

Line 19: The date, the 10th of Artamitios, has been restored on the basis of the mentioning of the Pythokleia for Zeus Soter on this date in the calendar of the gymnasium (IG XII.4 281, and cf. above).

Lines 23-29: (1) According to the restoration in IG, the first series of sacrifices is performed by the priests (i.e. the two priests of Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira, who are themselves descendants of Pythokles). These sacrifices include first of all, an animal of 100 dr. (likely to be a bovine, to be sacrificed to Zeus), then a heifer of an unknown value (likely to be the sacrifice to Athena). Some aspect of the sacrifice or other parts of the rituals apparently had "always" to be completed according to (?) "the custom of the country" (τὸ ἐπιχώριον): perhaps we may see this statement as a variation of the requirement to do things κατὰ τὰ πάτρια, according to the ancestral norms. Considering line 29: [...]ύσασι, and line 49: διανειμάτω τοῖς σ[...] together, has led to the likely restoration of [τὰ κρέα διανειμάτω τοῖς συνθ]ύσασι here. The phrase ἀφαιρεθέντων [γερέων] would probably have been specified further, either identifying the required perquisites or stating that what is "customary".

Lines 29-33: (2) Almost all details concerning the sacrifice made by another official (restored in IG as the monarchos) or group are unfortunately lost, except for some small details. The preservation of the month Artamitios in line 30 provides further confirmation that the inscription concerns the Pythokleia on the 10th of Artamitios (cf. above). The restored formula [ὅσα ἐπιτέτακται θύεν], (the monarchos is to sacrifice) "as much as is prescribed for him to sacrifice" (restored here, but almost completely preserved in line 50), is somewhat puzzling. We might have expected the regulation either to define what was prescribed to the officials (perhaps this may have occurred in another part of the inscription, now lost) or to refer more explicitly to a traditional or codified practice on Kos.

Lines 33-36: (3) For the sacrifice of the "descendants of Pythokles", the details are again almost completely restored, except for a mention of "taking" (the money for the sacrifice) and of an amount of 200 (dr.), i.e. the total amount of money which they are to receive to make the sacrifices?

Lines 36-38 and 38-40: In the next two sets of sacrifices, (4) and (5), hardly any significant details are preserved concerning the agents, animals or the prices of animals, with the exception of a sheep for Athena and the formula θυόντω δὲ καὶ, which provides a general idea of the structure and formulation of the regulations.

Lines 40-49: (6) In this section, a more elaborate description of a sacrifice is given (likely that made by the agonothetes), combined with the organisation of an athletic contest (line 42). The prescriptions include the crowning of the victors with a wreath of θάλλος (lines 44-45), the seating of officials during the games (lines 44-48), and the division of the meat (lines 48-49). The word θάλλος literally refers to a young branch or shoot, but was often used in the more specific sense of "olive branch" (cf. Paul, p. 49 with n. 105). The olive wreath was associated with victors in gymnastic contests.

Lines 49-52: (7) Another set of sacrifices by an unknown individual or group is prescribed in this passage. On the requirement that the agents should sacrifice "what is prescribed for them to sacrifice", cf. above on lines 29-33. The letters [...]σμον have been restored in IG as referring to a ξενισμός, meaning the entertainment of a divine guest. The word is rare but occurs in this sense in CGRN 96 (Kos) to refer to a ritual of hospitality offered to Heracles (cf. lines 61-62: τὸν ξενισμὸν ποιεῖν τῶ[ι] Ἡρακλεῖ, and 109-111), but it clearly also could refer to a human ritual of hospitality, cf. e.g. LBW 76 (Teos), line 48 (calling proxenoi to hospitality in the prytaneion). Similarly, the terms ξένια and ξενίζω are used to refer to rituals of theoxenia, e.g. in CGRN 40 (Apollonia), Face B, lines 5-6, and CGRN 98, fr. B, lines 5-8. It remains unclear what kind of ritual is envisaged here, and for whom the ceremony would have been performed. For instance, it is not clear in line 70 if the terms [ξενισ]μὸν and δαμοθοινί[αν] are meant to be contrastive (divine vs. human feast) or complementary (hosting of special guests and civic-wide feast).

Lines 53-57: (8) These lines prescribe a sacrifice for an unknown group and the [...]χνιάδαι, who are to sacrifice jointly. Hardly any details of the sacrifice are preserved, except for some mentions of amounts. The amount of 1000 dr. (or more) in line 57 is quite a large sum (perhaps this amount is equal or comparable to the 1170 dr. given to the [...]ασιοι directly below in line 62). The sizeable sum is perhaps partly explained by the fact that this is a joint sacrifice of two groups, but it also seems to account for the large and encompassing civic feast and the ξενισμός, if the restoration in line 57 is correct.

Lines 58-73: In the final four series of sacrifices, few details of note are preserved. These subsections are: (9) sacrifices for an unknown group and the [...]ασιοι who sacrifice together; some animals (two oxen, a pig, and sheep) are preserved (lines 58-62); (10) sacrifices by an another unknown group; a sheep and a bovine for Athena are preserved, as well as some amounts of money (lines 62-66); (11) a sacrifice of an unknown group mentioning the goddess Athena, the sacrifice of a pig, amounts of money and a δαμοθοινία or "public feast" (lines 66-70); (12) a sacrifice of another unknown individual or group, with few details, such as the mention of a bovine, preserved (lines 71-73).

<p>In this document, a cult of Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira is established through a donation by an apparently wealthy individual, Pythokles. The money (a sum of a talent may be mentioned in line 6) is destined for sacrifices and games. The context for this donation is apparently substantiated by the calendar of the gymnasium of Kos, which must date to a slightly later period than the present document <bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII.4">IG XII.4</bibl> 281 (ca. <ref target="CGRN_161">CGRN 161</ref> (donation of Teleutias for the Asklepieion) and <ref target="CGRN_197">CGRN 197</ref> (gift of Aristokreon in the deme of Isthmos).</p>

<p>As we are informed (line 7), Pythokles has "asked" for the priesthoods of Zeus Soter and of Athena Soteira to be heriditary and to remain within his family. From later sources, we gather that this plan was successful: two Roman sources (<bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII 4">IG XII.4</bibl> 822 and 1053) mention a priest of the Pythokleioi. Though the priesthood is reserved for Pythokles' descendants, the scale of the cult clearly exceeds that of a "family cult": many civic officials are mentioned among the cult agents and participants (the <foreign>monarchos</foreign>, the <foreign>agonothetes</foreign>, the gymnasiarch, the under-gymnasiarch, and other public priests); sacrifices are perhaps to be performed "for the safeguarding of the city" (restored in line 19); the cult is listed in the calendar of the gymnasium as already mentioned; and the treasurers (<foreign>tamiai</foreign>) are to be in charge of the money (cf. Paul, p. 52).</p>

<p> Zeus and Athena are widely worshipped together as a pair on Kos. Cf. for example the cult of Zeus Polieus and Athena Polias (<ref target="CGRN_86">CGRN 86</ref> A; cp. <bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII.4">IG XII.4</bibl> 332); Zeus Machaneus and Athena Machanis (<bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII.4">IG XII.4</bibl> 274); Zeus Alseios and Athena Alseia (<ref target="CGRN_167">CGRN 167</ref>). On these associations of Zeus and Athena, cf. Paul, p. 56-58. Zeus Soter is attested at Kos from the first half of the 3rd century onwards (<bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII.4">IG XII.4</bibl>, 68, where he is honoured together with Apollo Pythios and Nike after a military victory). Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira are worshipped together in the Koan deme of Phyxa (<ref target="CGRN_146">CGRN 146</ref>, lines 19-21, receiving a sacrifice on the 25th of Artamitios, and <bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII.4">IG XII.4</bibl> 407). Cf. Paul, p. 242 and 319-320, for a wider inventory of the combined cult of Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira in the Greek world.</p>

<p> The interpretation of the text remains difficult due to its highly fragmentary state: about a quarter seems preserved (about 14-21 letters in each line), though this is to some extent mitigated by its nearly equally highly formulaic character in many passages (the total restored length of each line is around 80 letters). Many of them seem to be related to an athletic context and we may thus hypothesize that they are the participants in a procession during the festival (similar lists of participants in a procession are found, e.g. in <ref target="CGRN_163">CGRN 163</ref>, <ref target="CGRN_165">CGRN 165</ref>, and <ref target="CGRN_167">CGRN 167</ref>).</p>

<p> In the remaining two-thirds of the preserved part of the inscription, sacrifices are prescribed for particular sacrificial agents or groups. The identity of the relevant individuals or groups is now predominantly lost, with the exception of the sacrifice of the descendants of Pythokles (lines 33-36), and that of the <foreign>agonothetes</foreign> responsible for the sacrifices in lines 40-49, which seems a likely restoration. Such lists of sacrifices prescribed for officials or groups of officials are rather common in for Kos (cp. e.g. <ref target="CGRN_142">CGRN 142</ref>, <ref target="CGRN_147">CGRN 147</ref>, lines 15ff., and <ref target="CGRN_167">CGRN 167</ref>, Face A, lines 24ff.).</p>

<p>The sacrificial regulations have been transmitted in a very fragmentary manner, but the individual description of each sacrifice apparently consists of some of the following identical elements: individuals or groups need to sacrifice "what they should sacrifice according to prescriptions" ([ὅσ]α ἐπιτέτακται θύεν αὐτ[οὺς, as preserved in line 50); sacrifices need to be made on a particular date, as preserved in line 30, very probably the 10th of Artamitios during which the Pythokleia occurred); sacrifices should be made to Zeus (lines 41, 58 and 71) and to Athena (lines 39, 64, and 68) respectively; the three species of animals mentioned are oxen, sheep and pigs (each occur as offerings for both gods); next, we find a requirement of sacrificing a heifer to Athena (line 25); financial arrangements may be specified (lines 26-27 and lines 34-35); and finally, there are mentions of "guest-hosting" (ξένισμος, lines 52 and 70) and the organisation of a "public feast" (δαμοθοινία, line 70), and the procedure for the division of the meat (lines 29, 49) is also explained. Hallof and Bosnakis in <title>IG</title> provide a helpful outline of the sacrifices and their recipients, as well as of the amounts budgeted for each animal: oxen are generally estimated at 140 dr. Given the uncertainty of many of the restorations in the text, however, we prefer to refrain from definitively identifying these possible differences in the gender of the animals.</p>

<p> Line 16-18 : Rather than referring to a portion of meat, μέρις here should properly refer to a "part" of the donation or the interest from the fund (i.e. a sum of money) assigned to each sacrificing individual or group.</p>

<p> Line 18: The allusion in the phrase "according to ..." (κατὰ τ[ὰ γεγραμμένα?) must be to an earlier or another part of present document, rather than referring to norms recorded elsewhere.</p>

<p> Line 19: The date, the 10th of Artamitios, has been restored on the basis of the mentioning of the Pythokleia for Zeus Soter on this date in the calendar of the gymnasium (<bibl type="abbr" n="IG XII.4">IG XII.4</bibl> 281, and cf. above).</p>

<p> Lines 23-29: (1) According to the restoration in <title>IG</title>, the first series of sacrifices is performed by the priests (i.e. the two priests of Zeus Soter and Athena Soteira, who are themselves descendants of Pythokles). The phrase ἀφαιρεθέντων [γερέων] would probably have been specified further, either identifying the required perquisites or stating that what is "customary".</p>

<p> Lines 29-33: (2) Almost all details concerning the sacrifice made by another official (restored in <title>IG</title> as the <foreign>monarchos</foreign>) or group are unfortunately lost, except for some small details. The preservation of the month Artamitios in line 30 provides further confirmation that the inscription concerns the Pythokleia on the 10th of Artamitios (cf. above). The restored formula [ὅσα ἐπιτέτακται θύεν], (the <foreign>monarchos</foreign> is to sacrifice) "as much as is prescribed for him to sacrifice" (restored here, but almost completely preserved in line 50), is somewhat puzzling. We might have expected the regulation either to define what was prescribed to the officials (perhaps this may have occurred in another part of the inscription, now lost) or to refer more explicitly to a traditional or codified practice on Kos.</p>

<p> Lines 33-36: (3) For the sacrifice of the "descendants of Pythokles", the details are again almost completely restored, except for a mention of "taking" (the money for the sacrifice) and of an amount of 200 (dr.), i.e. the total amount of money which they are to receive to make the sacrifices?</p>

<p> Lines 36-38 and 38-40: In the next two sets of sacrifices, (4) and (5), hardly any significant details are preserved concerning the agents, animals or the prices of animals, with the exception of a sheep for Athena and the formula θυόντω δὲ καὶ, which provides a general idea of the structure and formulation of the regulations.</p>

<p> Lines 40-49: (6) In this section, a more elaborate description of a sacrifice is given (likely that made by the <foreign>agonothetes</foreign>), combined with the organisation of an athletic contest (line 42). Paul, p. 49 with n. 105). The olive wreath was associated with victors in gymnastic contests.</p>

<p>Lines 49-52: (7) Another set of sacrifices by an unknown individual or group is prescribed in this passage. On the requirement that the agents should sacrifice "what is prescribed for them to sacrifice", cf. above on lines 29-33. The letters [...]σμον have been restored in <title>IG</title> as referring to a ξενισμός, meaning the entertainment of a divine guest. The word is rare but occurs in this sense in <ref target="CGRN_96">CGRN 96</ref> (Kos) to refer to a ritual of hospitality offered to Heracles (cf. lines 61-62: τὸν ξενισμὸν ποιεῖν τῶ[ι] Ἡρακλεῖ, and 109-111), but it clearly also could refer to a human ritual of hospitality, cf. e.g. <bibl type="abbr" n="LBW">LBW</bibl> 76 (Teos), line 48 (calling <foreign>proxenoi</foreign> to hospitality in the prytaneion). Similarly, the terms ξένια and ξενίζω are used to refer to rituals of <foreign>theoxenia</foreign>, e.g. in <ref target="CGRN_40">CGRN 40</ref> (Apollonia), Face B, lines 5-6, and <ref target="CGRN_98">CGRN 98</ref>, fr. B, lines 5-8. It remains unclear what kind of ritual is envisaged here, and for whom the ceremony would have been performed. For instance, it is not clear in line 70 if the terms [ξενισ]μὸν and δαμοθοινί[αν] are meant to be contrastive (divine vs. human feast) or complementary (hosting of special guests and civic-wide feast).</p>

<p> Lines 53-57: (8) These lines prescribe a sacrifice for an unknown group and the [...]χνιάδαι, who are to sacrifice jointly. The sizeable sum is perhaps partly explained by the fact that this is a joint sacrifice of two groups, but it also seems to account for the large and encompassing civic feast and the ξενισμός, if the restoration in line 57 is correct.</p>

<p> Lines 58-73: In the final four series of sacrifices, few details of note are preserved. These subsections are: (9) sacrifices for an unknown group and the [...]ασιοι who sacrifice together; some animals (two oxen, a pig, and sheep) are preserved (lines 58-62); (10) sacrifices by an another unknown group; a sheep and a bovine for Athena are preserved, as well as some amounts of money (lines 62-66); (11) a sacrifice of an unknown group mentioning the goddess Athena, the sacrifice of a pig, amounts of money and a δαμοθοινία or "public feast" (lines 66-70); (12) a sacrifice of another unknown individual or group, with few details, such as the mention of a bovine, preserved (lines 71-73).</p>
