CGRN 7

Fragments of a sacrificial regulation on a large monument near the Eleusinion at Athens

Date :

ca. 510-470 BC

Justification: lettering (Jeffery; Lewis; Lambert).

Provenance

Athens . The fragments were found primarily near the Eleusinion, others in the city centre. Most of the stone fragments are now in the Athenian Agora storehouse; see Lewis for full details.

Support

Twenty marble fragments, which were assigned by Jeffery to a large structure, possibly an altar. All of the fragments are heavily mutilated, and so we only include the more significant here: face A (fr. c, a and b, in the presumed order); face B (fr. f+g+h). For detailed measurements, see Jeffery.

Layout

Boustrophedon.

Attic letters: 12-15 mm high.

Bibliography

Edition here based on Lewis IG I³ 232, with a full description description of the fragments, notably based on the work of Jeffery (below). For a more recent edition, focussing particularly on face A fr. c, see Lambert, AIUK 4.1 1. We adopt Lambert's reading on face A, line 44. NB that, in the following text, we excerpt only face A, fr. c, a and b; face B, fr. f+g+h. Despite the relative uncertainty in the order of the fragments, we maintain Lewis' continuous numbering for the sake of consistency (see also Lambert).

Cf. also: Jeffery 1948, with ph.; Jeffery LSAG, p. 75-76 no. 44 with pl. 4; Sokolowski LSS 2 (fr. a.c.f+g+h); AIO , with English translation and commentary.

Commentary

Given its findspot and content, Jeffery hypothesises that the rituals inscribed as part of this originally lengthy account related to the genos of the Kerykes, one of the two principal ancestral groups involved in the Mysteries at Eleusis (the other being the Eumolpidai). Jeffery argued that the document was set up at the city Eleusinion. As Lewis rightly notes, the rituals appear to concern the cult of several gods beyond the strictly Eleusinian ones (Demeter and Kore). However, other elements suggest an Eleusinian context (cf. the expressions at lines A11-12, [μ]ύ̣στε-, and B15-16, μύ|στο-; both not reprised here). While admitting that "the authority responsible for the inscription is obscure", Lambert observes that the fragmentary text, as far as it is preserved, contains only provisions for sacrificial accoutrements and "extras", such as vegetal offerings; that no animals are prescribed and no accounting is present may thus be significant. Accordingly, Lambert suggests that the text may originate from a genos, probably Eleusinian (or even the Kerykes and Eumolpidai acting jointly), and represent the contributions of this group to public festivals (such as the Dipolieia, see below lines A24-27).

The organisation of the inscription suggests an account or a calendar of some sort, probably organised by deity or perhaps by festival, but these are often unclear in the fragments. At any rate, a precise calendrical logic is difficult to substantiate. After the more significant sextuple/hexacolon punctuation (∶∶∶), deities appear to be cited or perhaps ritual occasions (see below on lines A26-27); in many cases, it is uncertain which of these two options is actually the case. Smaller dicolon punctuation (:) separates individual offerings or other clauses.

Lines A20-21: Perhaps the dative of a festival is mentioned here as a heading for a part of the accounts. Possibilities include [Προαρκτ]ουρ|ίοι[σι] as reported in Lewis, or [Ἀπατ]ουρ|ίοι[ς] suggested with some hesitation by Sokolowski. The first occasion would be connected with the Prerosia (cf. Hsch. s.v.), of uncertain/variable date, while the Apatouria are thought to occur in Pyanopsion (cf. Mikalson). But the Apatouria, connected to phratries, would be surprising here if the text is of a public character or stems from a genos. Lambert additionally considers [Ἐροσ]ουρ|ίοι[ς], thinking of the festival of the Erosouria on 9 Gamelion attested at Erchia, cf. CGRN 52, col. B, lines 26-31. None of these interpretations seems completely compelling.

Lines A24-25: The βουτύπος mentioned might designate any sacrificial agent, but in Athens and especially in the context here, he must refer to the sacrificial agent or priest at the festival of the Dipolia, cf. LSJ s.v. and also on the βουφόνια. In this connection, it is noteworthy that the provisions accorded to this official immediately precede a mention of the Dipolia or its honorand (see below on the following lines). On Zeus Polieus, the Dipolia et the Bouphonia at Athens, cf. Lebreton and see immediately below.

Lines A26-27: The sextuple/hexacolon punctuation appears to signal the commencement of a new section in these accounts, either a new occasion or recipient for sacrifices. It occurs before what is likely a deity in line 35, below, and certainly before Erechtheus (almost certainly the deity) in line 50. The two options for restoration in this heading would therefore be Zeus Polieus, as given here, or the Dipolia itself, Διπολ[ίοισι]; both remain possible. The festival is known to have occurred on 14 Skirophorion (see Mikalson). Cf. also IG I³ 241, line 17, for the role of the Kerykes in this festival, and see Lambert for further discussion.

Line A35: The sextuple/hexacolon punctuation marks a new section and the letter traces suggest a goddess, either Κόρ[ει] or Κορ[οτρόφοι], either of which might suit the possible character of the document.

Line A38: The reading ἔτνος refers to a thick soup made with peas or beans, cf. LSJ s.v.; see also Lambert for further refs. and discussion.

Lines A43-44: The phylobasileis are adopted from the suggestion of Lewis. This group of officials was constituted by βασιλεῖς chosen from each old Ionian φυλή to perform sacrifices, cf. LSJ s.v. citing notably Arist. Ath. Pol. 8.3, Poll. 8.111 and 120, Hsch. s.v.; see further the Athenian state calendar, CGRN 45, face A, fr. 1., col. 3. In line 44, Lambert, with discussion, suggests to read a "cover", ἔλυτρον, of some sort; however, it is unclear what its function may have been.

Lines B1-B8: Jeffery's reconstruction of the text, followed by Sokolowski and Lewis, is based on the apparent similarity of the fragment with the provisions of the deme of Cholargos for the Thesmophoria, CGRN 79. This part of the account could therefore have pertained to that festival, taking place on 10-13 Pyanopsion. No certainty is possible, however; see Lambert for a nuanced and cautious discussion.

						<head>Commentary</head>

<p>Given its findspot and content, Jeffery hypothesises that the rituals inscribed as part of this originally lengthy account related to the <foreign>genos</foreign> of the Kerykes, one of the two principal ancestral groups involved in the Mysteries at Eleusis (the other being the Eumolpidai). Accordingly, Lambert suggests that the text may
originate from a <foreign>genos</foreign>, probably Eleusinian (or even the Kerykes and Eumolpidai acting jointly), and represent the contributions of this group to public festivals (such as the Dipolieia, see below lines A24-27).</p>

<p>The organisation of the inscription suggests an account or a calendar of some sort, probably organised by deity or perhaps by festival, but these are often unclear in the fragments. </p>

<p>Lines A20-21: Perhaps the dative of a festival is mentioned here as a heading for a part of the accounts. Mikalson). But the Apatouria, connected to phratries, would be surprising here if the text is of a public character or stems from a <foreign>genos</foreign>. Lambert additionally considers [Ἐροσ]ουρ|ίοι[ς], thinking of the festival of the Erosouria on 9 Gamelion attested at Erchia, cf. <ref target="http://cgrn.ulg.ac.be/CGRN_52">CGRN 52</ref>, col. B, lines 26-31. None of these interpretations seems completely compelling.</p>

<p>Lines A24-25: The βουτύπος mentioned might designate any sacrificial agent, but in Athens and especially in the context here, he must refer to the sacrificial agent or priest at the festival of the Dipolia, cf. <bibl type="abbr" n="LSJ">LSJ</bibl> s.v. and also on the βουφόνια. In this connection, it is noteworthy that the provisions accorded to this official immediately precede a mention of the Dipolia or its honorand (see below on the following lines). On Zeus Polieus, the Dipolia et the Bouphonia at Athens, cf. Lebreton and see immediately below. </p>

<p>Lines A26-27: The sextuple/hexacolon punctuation appears to signal the commencement of a new section in these accounts, either a new occasion or recipient for sacrifices. Cf. also <bibl type="abbr" n="IG I³">IG I³</bibl> 241, line 17, for the role of the Kerykes in this festival, and see Lambert for further discussion.</p>

<p>Line A35: The sextuple/hexacolon punctuation marks a new section and the letter traces suggest a goddess, either Κόρ[ει] or Κορ[οτρόφοι], either of which might suit the possible character of the document.</p>

<p>Line A38: The reading ἔτνος refers to a thick soup made with peas or beans, cf. <bibl type="abbr" n="LSJ">LSJ</bibl> s.v.; see also Lambert for further refs. and discussion.</p>

<p>Lines A43-44: The <foreign>phylobasileis</foreign> are adopted from the suggestion of Lewis. This group of officials was constituted by βασιλεῖς chosen from each old Ionian φυλή to perform sacrifices, cf. <bibl type="abbr" n="LSJ">LSJ</bibl> s.v. citing notably Arist. <title>Ath. Pol.</title> 8.3, Poll. 8.111 and 120, Hsch. s.v.; see further the Athenian state calendar, <ref target="http://cgrn.ulg.ac.be/CGRN_45">CGRN 45</ref>, face A, fr. 1., col. 3. In line 44, Lambert, with discussion, suggests to read a "cover", ἔλυτρον, of some sort; however, it is unclear what its function may have been. </p>

<p>Lines B1-B8: Jeffery's reconstruction of the text, followed by Sokolowski and Lewis, is based on the apparent similarity of the fragment with the provisions of the deme of Cholargos for the Thesmophoria, <ref target="http://cgrn.ulg.ac.be/CGRN_79">CGRN 79</ref>. This part of the account could therefore have pertained to that festival, taking place on 10-13 Pyanopsion. No certainty is possible, however; see Lambert for a nuanced and cautious discussion.</p>
